I am thrilled that I will be recruiting in Tunisia during the coming week, and together with a team of Harvard alumni and staff, wanted to share this information with you.

The Edward S. Mason program is the oldest international program at Harvard University, bringing approximately 85 accomplished Mid-Career students from over 50 ‘developing’, transitional and newly industrialized countries to HKS for a one year Master in Public Adminstration (MPA) degree. We are proud that eleven heads of state, including Nobel Peace Prize winner and former President Juan Manuel Santos, former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as well as the former Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki Moon and many other luminaries have graduated from the Mason Program.

I have chosen Tunisia as the country for my recruitment trip for this year because of the example the country has set in democratic transition; its strength of a cosmopolitan and educated population; its position as a regional leader in respect for rights like those of freedom of expression and women’s right; and its overall historic, strategic, cultural and geo-political importance. Both its achievements and its promise make it a compelling partner, and it is with great enthusiasm that I hope for a deepening of ties to the country and the region.

We have seen the accomplishment and the energy of the people coming from the region; I want to help HKS address the underrepresentation from the area, and I am thrilled that we have wonderful alumni with whom to partner. I want to do all I can to ensure the current and future leaders of Tunisia are availing of the resources and training that Harvard Kennedy School offers, and bringing your Tunisian experience, ideas and wisdom to the Harvard community. It is particularly exciting as there is funding for the best Tunisian candidates to the Mason Program through the Middle East – North Africa Graduate Fellowship Fund.

I will be in Tunisia, and I wanted to provide information to people who might be interested in finding out more. For these sessions, and the Mason program, we primarily seek leaders from all sectors who are working to better the world through policy, whether they come from government, non-governmental organizations, media, social movements, academia, central banks, social entrepreneurship, or elsewhere. I’ll be sharing, too, brief information about the other schools at Harvard.

Thank you so much for your consideration, and I look forward to meeting with you.

Yours,

Suzanne Shende, J.D.

Director of Edward S.
