There are cities that we visit for their heritage, others for their atmosphere or their curiosities. And then there are those which seduce with an exquisite impression, those which immediately make you feel good. During our visit to Angers this summer, it was precisely this feeling that struck us. From the first walk in the city center, one impression dominates: cleanliness, serenity and a feeling of well-being!
In the streets of Angers, the view is not harmed by visual pollution. Public spaces appear maintained, the streets are clean and vegetation occupies an important place in the landscape. But if Angers exudes so much cleanliness, it is not only because of the efficiency of municipal cleaning services (550 kilometers of roads to clean), but it is above all thanks to the civic-mindedness of the Angevins who make it possible to maintain the cleanliness of their city. Indeed, the cleaning service is extremely fragile: a street can be cleaned every morning, but if it is immediately littered with waste, the service is quickly impaired. Angevin citizenship reminds us that cleanliness is a shared responsibility, it is not enough to clean, but above all we must keep the place clean after cleaning! In addition to cleanliness, the presence of plants undoubtedly contributes to the Angevin sweetness. This impression is not only subjective. In May 2026, Angers retained first place in the list of green cities in France, for the fifth consecutive time, awarded by the Observatory of Green Cities, which notably evaluates revegetation, green spaces, biodiversity and policies for adaptation to climate change. The city has 1,570 hectares of natural spaces, parks and gardens, which represents more than 100 m² of landscaped spaces per inhabitant.
Despite sustained urban and demographic growth, Angers gives the feeling of a city on a human scale, where urban hustle and bustle does not seem to oppose tranquility. You can walk, sip a coffee on the Place du Ralliement (the real heart of the city center), stroll through the shopping streets with large brands or simply observe local life without feeling the pressure specific to large metropolises.
Our discovery of the city naturally led us to one of its emblematic monuments, the Château d’Angers. Built in the 13th century on a site dating back to prehistoric times, this impregnable fortress is perched on a promontory overlooking the Maine River. But beyond its 6,000 years of history, its numerous fishpond or pleasure gardens and its impressive military architecture, it is above all the famous Apocalypse tapestry, a unique masterpiece in the world, which constitutes the treasure of the site. Commissioned around 1375 by Louis I of Anjou, this monumental work is today considered the most important set of medieval tapestries preserved in the world. Listed since 2023 in the UNESCO Memory of the World register, it enchants as much by its dimensions (103 meters long and 4.50 m high) as by the virtuosity of its weaving (striking details and expressive characters) and the richness of its representations (74 scenes evoking war, pollution, illness, famine, death, etc.).
Just a few minutes from the bustling city center, we discover Lake Maine, a vast 220-hectare body of water in a green setting that invites relaxation and discovery. A true green lung of the city, the site offers a particularly conducive setting for outdoor activities with its vast green spaces and landscaped air spaces. Around the lake, many walkers explored the trails on foot or by bike, while water sports enthusiasts took advantage of the numerous activities offered on the lake. Also, the lake shore offers a small wooded beach for swimming and basking in the sun.
When leaving Angers, it is not only the images of its rich heritage that we keep in our memory. Above all, it is this rare feeling of a clean, green and peaceful city, where you can take the time to intensely savor life! This is perhaps where the main charm of Angers lies: succeeding in bringing together heritage, nature and peaceful urban life. The city does not seek to impress with excess, but rather seduces with its balance which ensures happy harmony. Angers cannot only be visited, it can be breathed!
