The Afromusée invites visual artists to participate in two days of live painting on August 1 and 2, 2026, as part of the commemoration of Emancipation Day.
This 2026 edition is inspired by the Negro Community Center (NCC) and aims to celebrate the memory of the NCC, to encourage citizen artistic creation and to strengthen the transmission of Afro-descendant stories within the community. For more than 60 years (1927 to 1993), the NCC was a symbol of resilience, community leadership and hope for Black Montrealers.
Since 2022, the Afromusée has been developing Inspired by, a citizen collection dedicated to promoting the history, collective memory and artistic contributions of diverse communities. This initiative has established itself as a flagship moment for the Afro-Canadian Museum (Afromusée), stimulating contemporary creation, strengthening the social fabric and contributing to the cultural recognition of black and Afro-descendant communities.

Conditions of participation• 12 places available• Selection according to the principle: first come, first served• Participation fee: $200 per artist• The Museum provides the canvas• The artist brings his inks, paints, brushes and any other personal material

The works produced during the live painting will be included in the Afromusée Citizen Collection, contributing to the promotion of the collective memory and artistic stories of black and Afro-descendant communities.
