Film Noir au Canal is proud to partner with the Cinémathèque québécoise to present a double bill dedicated to French actress Jeanne Moreau, a cinema legend whose career spans seven decades.
Outdoor screening at Film Noir au Canal For the second meeting of the season, Film Noir au Canal will present Touchez pas au grisbi (1954) by Jacques Becker, which stars Jeanne Moreau alongside Jean Gabin and Lino Ventura. In this film based on a novel by Albert Simonin, an aging, world-weary gangster is betrayed and forced out of retirement when his best friend is kidnapped and their loot of eight stolen gold bars is demanded as ransom.
This Sunday, July 19, festival-goers are invited to go to Square Saint-Patrick from 6:30 p.m. to attend this tribute event. The screening of the film, in the original French version with English subtitles, will begin at nightfall, around 8:50 p.m. It will be preceded by a presentation by Serge Turgeon, founder and artistic director of Film Noir at the Canal. Admission is free. In the event of rain, the screening will be postponed to Monday July 20.

At the cinema, fans of detective films can discover Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (1958) by Louis Malle, a work once again bringing together Jeanne Moreau and Lino Ventura. Inspired by the novel of the same name by Noël Calef, the film’s plot revolves around a self-confident businessman who murders his employer, the husband of his mistress, which unintentionally triggers a series of tragic events. This feature film, essential thanks to the music of Miles Davis and the performance of Maurice Ronet, will be presented in 35 mm on Saturday, July 18 at 8 p.m. at the Cinémathèque québécoise.
