Together, they released a new album, with a million copies produced.

Born 69 years ago under the pencil of André Franquin, Gaston Lagaffe has become one of the essential figures of Franco-Belgian comics. Initially a nonchalant antihero, he established himself as a character overflowing with imagination and energy (except when it comes to work!). Thanks to its humor, its inventiveness and the expressive graphics of the series, “Gaston” has become one of the most emblematic and funny works of the 9th art.

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-8992136571741975"
data-ad-slot="1055921646"
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHORS:

How was the Gaston-Delaf-Trondheim trio formed?

DELAF. After The Return of Lagaffe (volume 22 published in 2023), I wanted to take my mind off things. So I accepted Lewis’s offer to draw an album from his Donjon Parade series. But, after that, I was late for the next Gaston! The idea of working with a screenwriter therefore arrived. And with it the name of Lewis, with whom I knew we would get along.

LEWIS TRONDHEIM. Delaf and I have known each other for a long time. 25 years ago, when he was just a young author, he sent me plates of his own version of Lapinot! As a kid, I read and reread Gaston a thousand times. As an adult, I purchased all the successive reissues. But, when Delaf asked me to work on Gaston, I wondered if I would be able to do it… I first reassured myself by telling myself that we would write together. Except that he wanted me to compose the gags alone, even if he reserved the possibility of adapting them afterwards. This is how I wrote 75 gags, from which we pecked to build Booms and booms.

D. I only gave Lewis one indication: I wanted his gags to take place at the time of the Lagaffe Case, so the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s. Because, for me, this album is the perfect Gaston, with a sublime, very sensual drawing, done with a brush.

L.T. So I listed the objects that seemed emblematic of the 70s to me, including those already used by Franquin, wondering how I could push certain gags even further. In Des boum et des paf there will be a telephone booth or even a lie detector. This last idea came to me from gag 816, where Gaston played with 100 electronic assemblies, a DIY box supposed to allow the construction of an organ, a transmitter or… a lie detector. I thought it would be fun to use it on my editorial colleagues. Especially on Mademoiselle Jeanne…

D. This box of 100 electronic montages was too well designed not to really exist. So I looked for her. And I found it! Franquin left nothing to chance, neither in his design nor in his documentation. I try to do the same.

In which area of drawing do you think you have progressed since The Return of Lagaffe?

D. On the rhythm. I analyzed videos where we see Franquin drawing Gaston. There was a particular rhythm, like music in the line. Regularly, during the production of Des boum et des paf, I had the impression of assimilating little things. I referred less to Franquin’s work and trusted myself more. As a result of speaking Franquin, I speak it better, with less accent. But my goal is not to imitate him perfectly. I wouldn’t be able to do it. The line I set for myself is to stay in his mind.

BIOGRAPHIES:

Delaf:

Delaf – real name Marc Delafontaine – was born on October 9, 1973 in Sherbrooke, Canada. Reading The Smurfs, Asterix, Lucky Luke and Boule et Bill from a very young age, little Marc discovered a particular affection for “naughty” people like Iznogoud or Bobo. Should we see this as an explanation of the character of future Navels? The question may arise! Freshly graduated, he created, for Éditions Aquila Communications, small comic strips that newcomers to Quebec use to learn French. After working on the animated series Marsupilami, Delaf was offered to work on Kid Paddle. The graphic tests required by Dupuis Audiovisuel being very demanding, Delaf prefers to devote his time to the major project he has in mind, Les Nombrils, produced with Maryse Dubuc, for whom he has already illustrated children’s albums at Bayard. The desire of the two authors: to talk about adolescence through a biting series with cowardly humor. Les Nombrils was published by Dupuis from 2006 and already has eight volumes. In 2023, Marc Delaf makes a dream come true by tackling the iconic character of Gaston Lagaffe, thus paying homage to Franquin. Today, it is in collaboration with Lewis Trondheim that he signs the 23rd volume of Gaston Lagaffe.

Lewis Trondheim:

Born in 1964, Lewis Trondheim has a style inspired by his love of the great classics of Franco-Belgian comics, with an animalistic trait, a keen sense of dialogue and an unbridled soap opera fantasy. In 1998, Lewis Trondheim created the Dungeon series with Joann Sfar and a multitude of authors: a heroic fantasy series with a titanic numbering! From 2008, he took over the Spirou newspaper, where he created the great Ralph Azham saga and multiplied new collaborations with Guillaume Bianco (Zizi Bat-Mouse), Matthieu Bonhomme (Omni-visibilis, Texas Cowboys) or Stéphane Oiry (Maggy Garrisson), without forgetting the multi-headed series L’Atelier Mastodonte, with a dozen authors. In 2024, he signs a new story: El Diablo, a Marsupilami in the time of the conquistadors, alongside Alexis Nesme. He collaborated with Fabrice Tarrin in 2025 for Spirou: The Treasure of San Inferno. In 2026, Lewis Trondheim joins Marc Delaf on volume 23 of Gaston Lagaffe.

Article navigation

<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-8992136571741975"
data-ad-slot="1055921646"
data-ad-format="auto"></ins>

On the occasion of the Paris Book Festival, Dupuis editions announce the long-awaited return of Gaston Lagaffe with the publication of volume 23, entitled “Des Boum et des Paf”, in bookstores on October 21, 2026.
