Two generations of her family undertake a journey to their country of origin, Vietnam, to recognize the weight that guilt and the taboo of mental illness have placed on their lives. Can we grieve if we never had the chance to express it? Digging up old medical records and long-suppressed pains, the filmmaker guides those close to them towards their own vulnerability. A disarming emotional frankness mixes with the veiled world of ancestral beliefs. Traditional rites and melancholy wanderings soon bring the group to the gates of the territory of spirits. A melancholic poem on the complexity of loss, this first feature film by Carol Nguyen testifies to the power of art to restore bonds and heal souls.

[embedded content]

The film will be released in spring 2027.

About La nuit, le brasier, by Carol Nguyen (76 min)Production: Audrey-Ann Dupuis-Pierre (Portage Films), Robert Vroom and Ariel Nasr (ONF)Executive production: Sylvain Corbeil (Metafilms), Nathalie Cloutier (ONF), Bob Moore (EyeSteelFilm) and Anh Duy Vo Dinh (Spotlight Production)

About the filmmakerCarol Nguyen is a Vietnamese-Canadian director based in Montreal, whose films explore themes of cultural identity, family and silence.
