It already poses a catastrophic and urgent threat to health. The message is therefore not to shift attention from one threat to another, but to broaden our capacity for anticipation. Some threats cause acute, highly visible crises, others act slowly over decades, and many are mutually reinforcing. The challenge is to move away from a crisis-by-crisis reaction logic to anticipate and act sooner in the face of a broader set of threats.

However, obesity is not the most worrying threat. Two others stand out for their potential to “drive human extinction by 2100.” The first is the malicious use of artificial intelligence in that it could notably be responsible for the creation of new biological weapons. The same goes for the risk of nuclear conflict which would lead to famine on a global scale.

Among the plausible catastrophes listed alongside obesity, there are 14 other causes that could give rise to health consequences deemed “catastrophic” by scientists. Among them, smoking, air pollution, high alcohol consumption, antibiotic resistance, child malnutrition, climate change, forest fires, traditional conflicts, cardiovascular diseases, and even natural pandemics. Among the threats that we did not necessarily expect to see alongside child malnutrition: income inequalities.

Indeed, inequalities influence exposure to dangers, vulnerability and the ability to overcome a crisis. Low-income and marginalized populations are therefore more likely to suffer the consequences. Preparedness must therefore go beyond responses to each threat taken separately.

How can we prevent these threats from becoming reality?

Nothing is decided in advance and fortunately. If this list is cause for concern, scientists point out that a large part of these dangers could be avoided by acting now. First project, prevention. Eating a more balanced diet, moving more, reducing tobacco and alcohol or detecting certain diseases earlier would already make it possible to avoid many premature deaths.

But it is also better to prepare hospitals for future health crises, train more caregivers and strengthen epidemic surveillance. Research could also make a difference, notably through new vaccines and treatments against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

For threats such as artificial intelligence or nuclear wars, the solutions mainly involve international rules and better cooperation between states. The fact remains that not all countries have the same means. Some must above all manage aging and chronic illnesses, while others still struggle to guarantee access to drinking water, sufficient food or healthcare. Hence the importance of maintaining international health aid, essential for many countries to protect their populations.

Plan ahead so as not to suffer. Humanity still has the capacity to act. The proposed response involves prepared health systems, increased investment in innovation and regular reassessment of threats.

Mohand Lyazid Chibout (Iris)

Article navigation

<insclass="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-8992136571741975" data-ad-slot="6185130430"></ins>

Would these threats that could tip humanity over by 2100 end up reducing our life expectancy?
