Parc-Extension tenants gather to demand that Habitations Jean-Valets be rebuilt and preserved as social housing
More than three years after the evacuation of Habitations Jean-Valets, tenants of Parc-Extension are gathering this Sunday, July 26, 2026 at noon in front of Habitations Jean-Valets, 8445 Bloomfield (at the corner of rue Liège).
This festive action is organized to denounce the persistent delays in the renovation of Habitations Jean-Valets and to demand that social housing be restored there.
On October 31, 2022, the evacuation of this building of 65 low-cost housing units for seniors was completed due to structural problems. As a result, many elderly tenants were relocated outside of Parc-Extension and found themselves cut off from their resources and support networks. Despite an investment of $2.2 billion in the renovation of social housing as part of the 2020 Canada-Quebec agreement, the building remains empty almost three years later, while tenants face rising rents and evictions in the neighborhood. This building is one of two HLM buildings that remain barricaded in Montreal.
Through speeches, music and committed theater, the tenants want to argue that three years is already three years too long. They also demand that the building be maintained as low-rent social housing – and not as a mixed project with so-called “affordable” housing – and that it be renovated without delay.
