From July 7 to 19, 2026, the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique de Montréal will celebrate its 40th anniversary. In 40 years, Nuits d’Afrique has become the essential stage where cultures and rhythms mingle and create an unprecedented musical effervescence. For 13 days, nearly 130 concerts and activities will bring together more than 700 artists from 30 countries, in 6 rooms and on the free outdoor site of the Quartier des spectacles.
The largest event of its kind in North America, Nuits d’Afrique has established itself as an emblematic event with a unique identity. This anniversary edition will be an opportunity to revisit four decades of world music in Montreal. It will reaffirm the exceptional scope of a festival whose longevity is based on an authenticity that has never been denied, an essential relevance – both for the development of artists and the promotion of heritage and for living together – and an ever-increasing influence, here and internationally.
Several symbolic concerts, stamped “40 years”, will be put forward throughout the Festival, indoors and outdoors. Crossing the different series, they will illustrate the richness of the legacy of Nuits d’Afrique. The international and local artists who will participate all have a particular attachment to the Festival and fully embody its vision—as evidenced by the anthem “United by the Nights,” composed and performed by several of them on the occasion of this 40th anniversary.
INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS WHO HAVE LEFT THEIR MARK
The Republic of Guinea wished to take part in the celebrations by organizing an exceptional show in honor of the founding president of the Festival, Lamine Touré: “This initiative demonstrates our desire to salute the remarkable contribution of our compatriot to the international influence of Guinean culture” expressed Mr. Malick Kébé, general director of the Arts and Culture Development Fund of the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Crafts of Guinea. Sia Tolno, Degg J, AK, Manamba Kanté, Soul Bangs, Habib Fatako will follow one another on stage in this large-scale show.
Several international figures who have marked the history of the Festival will also be there: Oumou Sangaré, Admiral T, Tabou Combo, Tiken Jah Fakoly, Diblo Dibala and Matchatcha as well as Chris Combette: their presence is essential both for their talent, their influence on their musical genre and their essential role in the transmission of heritage and support for the next generation.
THE NIGHT CHILDREN OF AFRICA
For 40 years, Lamine Touré, driven by constant curiosity and the desire to create bridges between cultures, has continued to promote Montreal’s abundant world music scene and support its artists well beyond borders.
Their names are Djely Tapa, Aboulaye Koné, Diely Mori Tounkara, Adama Daou, Fa Sissokho, Mamoutou Dembélé (the Griots of Montreal); Labess; Sadio, Fa and Noumoucounda Sissokho (the Sissokho Brothers); Elage Diouf; Kalabanté; Taafé Fanga; Lorraine Klaasen; Jab Djab; King Shadrock; Westli; Kizaba; Joyce N’Sana. All are part of the history of the Festival, have grown up with it and will participate in this anniversary edition.
NEW GENERATIONS
Celebrating 40 years of discoveries also means continuing to look toward the future. An incubator of new talents and on the lookout for new trends, a privileged witness to the evolution of genres and the globalization of rhythms, the International Nuits d’Afrique Festival has, over the years, highlighted new generations of artists spotted during the year during the Nuits d’Afrique acoustic cabarets at Club Balattou, the Syli d’or de la musique du monde or international professional meetings. They too are the children of Nuits d’Afrique and will continue to grow with the event.
This year, in this category, we will notably find La Murga Ensemble, Fulu Miziki, Guiss Guiss Bou Bess, Sika Rlion, Boubé, Zalam Kao, Tamboréal Samba Bloco, Bastin Band, as well as several other emerging artists.
40 YEARS OF VIBRANT MEETINGS
Since the first editions on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, the journey through the cultures of Africa, the West Indies and Latin America, as well as the rich human connection that results from it, have been at the heart of the intention of the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique. As every year, numerous shows and activities will enliven the highly anticipated Village des Nuits d’Afrique, from July 14 to 19, at the Parterre du Quartier des spectacles and on the Esplanade Tranquille.
Dozens of free shows offering a wide range of cultures of African descent, including the Grands events TD presented at the end each evening or the Women of the World series which will light up the Loto-Québec stage; fascinating dance and music workshops; intimate artistic encounters at the Cabaret; tasty culinary discoveries on the Walk of Flavors; good deals at the unmissable Timbuktu Market; fun activities at the Radio-Canada Children’s Village; without forgetting the energetic interludes of the Escales Tropiques DJs… The Village des Nuits d’Afrique offers a complete experience, to the delight of families who are impatiently awaiting this event.
New for this 40th anniversary, the Festival will take over Sainte-Catherine Street. Giant screen, retrospectives, sharing of memories, activities and strolls with Kalabanté, spectacular projections: so many experiences that will make passers-by who do not yet know about the event want to make a detour, without delay, to the Village des Nuits d’Afrique!

SONG UNITED BY NIGHTS
40th anniversary anthem
On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Festival International Nuits d’Afrique unveils “United by Nights”, an original musical work which embodies the very essence of this flagship event: the meeting of cultures, the transmission of heritage and the celebration of living together.
Carried by an exceptional cast, namely: Tiken Jah Fakoly, Sékouba Bambino, Meiway, Diblo Dibala, Oumou Sangaré, Djely Tapa and Yves “Fan Fan” Joseph and a choir of local artists for the chorus, the song brings together emblematic voices from Africa and its diaspora in a vibrant and timeless artistic dialogue.
Through rich and mixed sounds, United by Nights crosses musical and geographical borders, connecting traditions and modernity, roots and future. From ancestral breath to contemporary textures, each performer breathes their own color into it, contributing to a sound fresco that is both intimate and universal.
The lyrics, both poetic and unifying, celebrate Montreal as a point of convergence of cultures and pay tribute to four decades of music, sharing and emotions. Carried by a unifying refrain, “Unis par les nuits / United by the nights”, the song stands out as a true hymn to unity, diversity and the power of the collective.
More than a song, United by the Nights is a declaration: that of a festival which, for 40 years, has made hearts vibrate to the rhythm of the world and brings together, evening after evening, thousands of voices under the same sky.
