Bruno Chevrier, aka Nob, is a French designer and screenwriter who has illustrated numerous series in the children’s section.
After having published as an author several series including Bogzzz, Mon ami Grompf, Mamette and Les Souvenirs de Mamette, he has been delighting us for around ten years with the adventures of Dad at Éditions Dupuis.
The success of the Dad series is undeniable. In addition to the 12 albums in the series and special editions, there are novel adaptations from Éditions Hachette Jeunesse, as well as an animated series which was broadcast in 52 11-minute episodes.
A rhythmic and endearing daily life
Created and imagined by Nob in 2014, Dad is a comic strip which recounts the adventures of a father who lovingly raises his four daughters born from four different unions.
Despite his difficulties in making ends meet, Dad takes care of his little tribe: Panda, the studious eldest, Ondine, the second with a strong character, Roxane, the very energetic third and Bérénice, the youngest.
Nob illustrates the daily life of this happy little family through short stories on one or two boards, where he depicts humorous and inspiring situations. It is with kindness that Dad raises his four daughters who have grown up over the course of 12 albums.
This “father of all trades”[1] » makes every effort to protect the “ family cocoon[2] « . He represents “quiet strength[3] » that nothing disturbs. He is the “star at home[4] » as we see in a new special issue entitled: Family cooking[5].
Focus on the special edition “Family cooking”
So, La compil’ de Dad, is a special issue which brings together jokes from the whole family in the kitchen, to the extent that “ pop dad[6] » tries each time to vary the menus for his “daddy’s girls[7] « .
It must be said that pasta is more popular with girls than grandmother’s recipes. As soon as Dad wants to prepare dishes with vegetables, the girls start to complain: Ondine doesn’t like carrots » (p. 10), Roxane doesn’t like leek soup (p. 20), while for Panda the smell of cauliflower puree resembles the smell of old socks » (p. 22). In short, pizzas and hamburgers are at the top of the list of girls’ favorite foods.
A mirror of our society
Behind the bursts of laughter, the character of Dad offers a beautiful showcase of these fathers who are fully involved in everyday tasks. By extension, the series pays a subtle tribute to the mental burden and invisible actions of all mothers in the world, which we too often tend to take for granted.
