After bringing together more than 300 people per screening, the 10th edition of Film Noir au Canal will conclude with the screening of Sweet Smell of Success (1957), a masterpiece by American filmmaker Alexander Mackendrick. A cynical film exploring themes of power, intimidation, lies and corruption, this cinema classic remains extremely relevant today. It will be presented this Sunday, August 16 at Square Saint-Patrick, in collaboration with Cult MTL.
In this work by Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Susan Harrison, an influential Broadway columnist forces an unscrupulous press agent to end his sister’s romantic relationship with a jazz musician.
The festivities will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a musical performance by Karen Myatt. They will be followed by a presentation by Justine Smith, programmer of the Underground section of the Fantasia International Film Festival and film critic for various media (Cult MTL, CBC, Roger Ebert, Hyperallergic, Little White Lies). At 8:15 p.m., Sweet Smell of Success will be screened free of charge and outdoors, in the original English version with French subtitles.
Entrance is free. In the event of rain, the screening will be postponed to Monday August 17.
