It is with regret that we announce the death of Serge Losique, on September 8, 2026 at the age of 94, at Granby hospital after several weeks of hospitalization.
First a teacher of French and then of cinema, Serge Losique founded the Conservatory of Cinematographic Art in 1968, whose film collection is today mainly at the Cinémathèque québécoise, then founded the Festival des Films du Monde in 1977, which he directed until 2018, all with the aim of providing the general public with a cinematic education.
He leaves to mourn his three children, Jacques, François and Anne-Marie, and his three grandchildren, Patrick, Éric and Jinju.
The family asks for respect for their privacy at this difficult time. No interviews will be granted.
Tribute
On behalf of the newspaper L’initiative, I present my condolences to the Serge Losique family. By launching my newspaper in 2014, I had to cover the World Film Festival, which was considered an unmissable event for cinema in Montreal. The year that followed, by contacting the festival team, I established one of my first partnerships between my newspaper and a major event in the Metropolis. I am proud to have contributed to the influence of the World Film Festival by being a partner media during the 39th edition of the Festival in 2015 and the 40th edition in 2016. I cite this episode of my life (and that of the newspaper L’initiative), to emphasize that my path crossed that of Serge Losique. Thank you Mr. Losique. Rest in peace.
