Film Noir au Canal is proud to partner with the Fantasia International Film Festival to present The Set-Up (1949) by Robert Wise and The Seventh Victim (1943) by Mark Robson, as part of a program exploring the links between film noir and horror cinema. For this fifth meeting of the season, the festival will have the honor of welcoming Will Straw, James McGill Professor Emeritus of Urban Media Studies at McGill University and author of the book Nights in Fairyland: Gossip, Blackmail and the Many Lives of Broadway Brevities (2026).
This Sunday, August 9, the public is invited to gather from 6:30 p.m. at Square Saint-Patrick. At nightfall, around 8:30 p.m., The Set-Up (72 minutes) will be screened in the original English version with French subtitles. In this film, winner of the FIPRESCI prize at the third edition of the Cannes Film Festival, a boxing manager (George Tobias), expecting the usual defeat, accepts bribes from a gangster gambler (Alan Baxter) without telling his boxer (Robert Ryan).
Around 9:45 p.m., the evening will continue with The Seventh Victim (71 minutes), a certainly daring psychological thriller. Also presented in the original English version with French subtitles, the film follows a young girl (Kim Hunter) in search of her sister (Jean Brooks), who has mysteriously disappeared. When she finds her, she is under the influence of a sect of Satan worshipers.
Entrance is free. In case of rain, the screening will be postponed to Monday August 10.
