Film Noir au Canal is pleased to partner with the magazine 24 images to present Le Trou (1960) by Jacques Becker. This great classic of French cinema, completed two weeks before the director’s death, is adapted from the eponymous novel by José Giovanni and based on a true story.
Directed by Marc Michel, the film tells the story of Claude Gaspard, accused of attempted murder of his wife and locked up in the Santé prison. His four cellmates, aptly played by Michel Constantin, Jean Keraudy, Philippe Leroy and Raymond Meunier, tell him of their desire to escape and dig, with fierce energy, a tunnel that will lead them to freedom. This Sunday, August 2, festival-goers are invited to go to Square Saint-Patrick from 6:30 p.m. The screening of the film, in the original French version with English subtitles, will begin at nightfall, around 8:30 p.m. It will be preceded by a presentation by Bruno Dequen, film critic and editor-in-chief of the magazine 24 images.
Entrance is free. In the event of rain, the screening will be postponed to Monday August 3.
About Six Sunday evenings in the summer, since 2015, Film Noir au Canal has presented cult detective films free of charge outdoors on the banks of the Lachine Canal. Amid silos and industrial buildings, the crime film festival could hardly dream of a better atmosphere. The films screened are from a selection of masterpieces of classic or contemporary film noir. Film Noir au Canal is presented thanks to the financial support of W. Maxwell Agendas, the Arrondissement du Sud-Ouest, the Caisse Desjardins du Sud-Ouest de Montréal and the Caisse Desjardins de Montréal.
The 10th edition of Film Noir at the Canal continues until August 16, 2026
