Pro gamer[1] is the new futuristic and fantastic comic strip from Franco-Quebec screenwriter Tristan Roulot and Spanish designer Guerrero Mateo. After Heritage Rum and The forest of time, the duo therefore immerses us in the world of video games, where they draw inspiration from their respective references to tell the story of Lam, a teenager addicted to video games.
Tristan Roulot takes real pleasure in varying genres when he tells each story, going from espionage in Diplomatic Chronicles, to the apocalyptic future in The conveyor and heroic fantasy and Pro gamer video games.
He and Guerrero Mateo chose to go further by drawing inspiration from manga and video games to make us experience action and emotion with Lam’s journey which is punctuated by obstacles whether in real life or in the virtual world.
Lam’s virtual odyssey
Lam is a teenager passionate about virtual video games. In this digital universe, where he spends his days and nights on titles like Lethal Legend, he has chosen the pseudonym Cyclops.
His ultimate goal? Defeat the most formidable boss in the game: the Imperial Magma Dragon. With his acolytes, he hopes to get noticed and be recruited by Karmatek, a world-renowned professional player structure.
Lam wants to prove to the world that he is the best Build Poison Samurai in the game. This is why integrating the Karmatek would allow him to improve his lot and treat his sick grandmother.
A premonitory series
This comic resonates strangely with what our future could be, as Lam’s grandmother reminds us so well:
—Dude, the world hasn’t always been like this. Before, life was the real world. This is where people spent all their time. To build, create, socialize, communicate. But the world no longer needs people. AIs solve our problems. Robots build solutions. And for us, the system gives us something to live on. So, you, young people, are being fed virtual entertainment to prevent you from doing stupid things out of boredom… with consoles that keep you locked in your rooms, but force you to move anyway, to stay in good health. It’s your world, that’s how it is. For many, it killed hope. But you…I saw this light in your eyes! You believed in something! (p.41)
