From August 14, the Museum Cinema exclusively presents A FRAGILE AND WONDERFUL WORLD, the first feature-length fiction film by Cyril Aris.
After its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and its selection as Lebanon’s official candidate in the best international feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards, A FRAGILE AND WONDERFUL WORLD is finally presented in Montreal after a tour of more than a year in international festivals.
The film follows Nino and Yasmina, two lovers who have been intimately tied to each other for decades, whose relationship reflects their country’s fluctuations between hope and despair. As their lives experience ups and downs, Lebanon’s political and social climate is also evolving, raising questions about how to reconcile a love affair, difficult trials and how to bring children into the world in an uncertain world.
After making several documentaries and short films, director Cyril Aris chose to build his first feature-length fiction film around a love story in order to highlight the duality between beauty and sadness, and to emphasize that history and politics always find a way to interfere in daily life, relationships and the most intimate decisions, such as starting a family or leaving one’s native country. The balance between happiness and desolation, between romance and breakup, seemed to be the most authentic way to tell this story, because despite the darkness, humor, love and family always survive.SynopsisNino and Yasmina fall in love in the playground of their school in Beirut, and dream of their adult life, of a wonderful world. 20 years later, they meet again by accident and it’s crazy, magnetic, incandescent love again.
